Zambia featuring Michael Baird of SWP Records

2 hours of music from Zambia with a big focus on traditional styles and instruments.

Features an extensive interview with Michael Baird who was born in Zambia and has created numerous field recordings in Zambia. We discuss his strong bonds with the musicians, the traditional instruments and rhythms of Zambia and how he has incorporated Zambain music into his own compositions.

Michael talks to me about his film Mutanuka and Syasiya about two incredible artists. They are both at the end of a long line of musicians who have learned how to play their instruments from the older generation. I have played a number of tunes featuring these artists on the show, shocasing their instruments - Crispin Mutanuka plays the Silimba (a 17-note xylophone) and Edwin Syasiya plays a thumb harp called a Kalumba.
