Uganda Radio Show

This is going to be the last show on Musicbox Radio, but not the last radio show I do for sure!  I’ll be popping up somewhere else soon enough to carry on my mission to do a show from every country in Africa…

I found it hard to find much of the 60s, 70s and 80s music that I usually cover in my shows, which I assume is largely to do with the continuous conflict and civil wars that wracked the country for so many years.

As a result I’ve covered a lot more contemporary music including Reggae, Ragga, Reggaton and Hip Hop.  I’ve also featured some interesting collaborations - The Orb did a project with a Ugandan Duo called Roland & Albert which combines electronic beats and production with traditional instruments and Ugandan vocals.  I also played a few tunes from an album called Electro Acholi Kaboom from Northern Uganda.  The Acholi style is from the Luo region of Uganda and is made up of a selection of recordings from between 2003 and 2015.

Electo Acholi started out as music for weddings when the traditional bands became too expensive due to the local conflict and so producers would be commissioned to make a song specifically for the occasion, do the music for the wedding and film the occasion.  The party-ready music then spread to the clubs where it is well suited with its high energy - many of the tracks are up around 160 beats per minute!

Thanks to Musicbox Radio for the opportunity to start making radio, now on to the next chapter…
