Cape Verde Radio Show
Cape Verde is the subject of, in my opinion, one of the greatest stories / myths in the history of music. As the story goes, a ship loaded with synthesisers left from Baltimore in 1968 headed for Brasil. The ship got lost and eventually turned up on one of the Cape Verdean islands. According to reports from Portuguese scientists who assessed the ship, it ended up some way inland, not on the coast, and was covered with some kind of space dust (!) on the surface of the vessel.
The Moogs and Korg synthesisers were distributed across the schools on the islands and resulted in an explosion of sound in the 70s and 80s. The synth sounds combined with traditional styles like Funana which were more prominent as they gained their independence from Portugal. The music of this period has been captured on a brilliant collection called Space Echo - The Mystery Behind the Cosmic Sound of Cape Verde Finally Revealed, and a number of tunes from that collection are featured here….
