Angola Radio Show
I recently met a great DJ crew called Mas Fuego at a Musicbox Radio party in Shoreditch. We made an instant connection and I discovered that DJ Greeso has a love for the music of Angola, so I decided to go there for my next show. His guest mix is a house heavy party selection and I cover a range of genres including Sokous, Kizomba and Kudura.
Much of the music of Angola that I discovered has a heavily Latin flavour. This is partially attributed to the presence of Cuban military who allied with the MLPA (People Movement for the Liberation of Angola) in the 70s and 80s. In addition, Cuban Rumba was extremely popular across southern Africa in the latter half of the 20th century.
There is also a strong connection to Portugal as a colony of the country up until 1975. This means that a lot of the signing is in Portuguese but also contributed to an ongoing musical exchange which reinforced the Latin influences, both as an export and an import musically.
